Ah, to be a character on Gossip Girl. Sure, you have seemingly endless problems, but looking good 24/7 certainly isn’t one of them. Here are the very best of the outfits from Gossip Girl season one.
If you haven’t done so already, check out the series of posts I have done ranking the sartorial efforts of Blair Waldorf, Serena Van Der Woodsen, Jenny Humphrey and Vanessa Abrams. If you don’t have time for that, or are simply looking for a reminder of what beautiful clothes you wished you owned but never can, read on for a collection of the best outfits from season one of Gossip Girl.
Blair’s Best Outfits – Season One
This dress is so great because it’s just so sweet. I love anything with above-the-elbow sleeves like this, and I’m also an absolute sucker for anything black-and-white. I also like this dress because it looks like it’s so versatile – you could wear it with boots and a jacket, or you could wear it with tights and a coat. It’s got a lot of options, and looking great is included in every one of them.
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I would do pretty much anything for this coat. How do I love thee? Shall I describe the ways: the colour, the material the sleeves, the piping, the pockets, the styling with the little gold tie and the black gloves. If I could just have this coat and nothing else, I’d be happy.
I think I mentioned this in my main post about Blair’s outfits, but I remember the day after this episode aired, so many people came to school with their hair styled like this and with a headband. I’ve kind of always just worn my hair in buns like this from then on (obviously minus the headband). It’s the quintessential Preppy Blair outfit, and it represents a fantasy life for the audience.
Serena’s Best Outfits – Season One
On paper, this outfit doesn’t seem overly expensive like the other things worn by the characters in in the show – it’s a top, denim shorts and a cardigan. Anyone could wear this, but nobody would look like Serena. Part of her characterization was the ability to take what were technically pretty ordinary outfits and make them magnificent, like this one is.
This dress is just so beautiful. If you think about it, the outfit itself is a perfect encapsulation of Serena’s character. You’ve got the fun, larger than life aspect, as represented by the sequins. You’ve got the sex appeal, represented by the colour red and the cut of the dress. You’ve got the sense of refinement, as indicated by the heels. You’ve got the wealth, represented by the gold jewelry. And you’ve got the more down-to-earth-ness, represented by the simple grey tights. Analyzing potential symbolism in outfits from Gossip Girl might be really stretching the scope of the show, but I’m going to do it anyway.
This dress has so many lovely details. The embroidery, the slight shimmer of the material and the scallop trim of the skirt all elevate it into a dress worthy for a re-introduction brunch with all of your toxic friends. Shame about Dan’s god-awful jacket, though.
Jenny’s Best Outfits – Season One
This outfit is not only really nice, it does a perfect job of showing Jenny’s transition from innocence to evil. Notice how she’s not only acting like Blair, she’s styled exactly like her?
I love dresses that have interesting details, like appliques. This dress is such a standout, it would make you the centre of attention at any party, even if you weren’t hosting it.
I really love the colour green, and especially the colour green that this bolero is. All of the colours of this outfit are working together in perfect harmony.
Vanessa’s Best Outfits – Season One
Vanessa excels at using colour to her advantage and creating casual outfits that are funky but seem realistic for someone with a smaller budget.
A bright and beautiful dress, the outfit is completed with the gold jewellery which looks fantastic with the overall colour scheme of the outfit.
This outfit could have been plain, but the necklaces really spice it up. Now it’s an “outfit”, not just a top and shorts.
So, there you have it. The best outfits from Gossip Girl season one. If you want more from this season, check out the individual outfit rankings for Blair, Serena, Jenny or Vanessa, and stay tuned for more – this has turned into a really fun little side-project!
